This page is to say thank you to all the people who donated to R.A.I.N. and helped the children in Monkey Bay and surrounding villages. Below are some pictures showing how the money was spent and how working together we can achieve things in this small community. The people who we managed to help this time and many others members of the community asked me to send my thanks to you all and hope that you will all continue to support R.A.I.N. in the future. One Love is all that we need to begin making a difference and this trip was remarkable for many reasons, not least that a real change has started to take place in the people I met who know that if they want to see a difference for their children they have to be willing to help too.
We bought 100 mosquito nets and also insecticides to treat the houses through MVO and distributed them in Namgoma 2. As most people are aware Malaria is one of the biggest killers in the area . The female mosquito that causes Malaria is most prevalent between the hours of dusk and dawn. By sleeping under treated mosquito nets and spraying the interior walls of the houses the risk is minimised. Most people out in Monkey Bay have had Malaria on many occasions but once cerebral malaria hits there is very little time to act. Treating the nets is simple - they come with a tablet that is dissolved in water and the whole net is soaked before being dried and hung above the bed, The cost of the above was £4 per net inc: treatment.
We funded the clearing of land for a play area outside of the newly built Namakoma 2 orphanage run by Zafa Laston.
We bought tins of paint and equipment and painted the children's ward of the Monkey Bay Community Hospital . We felt that a more welcoming environment for the children whilst was not of any direct medical help made it a much more pleasant place for the children when they have to stay there. It was a massive amount of work that was carried out by the volunteers headed by Rob Michel. When completed it really did make a difference for the many children who have to pass through the doors and the animals and Mr Men gave them something other than bare walls to look at.
Thanks to Kingsley Thom, Miner, Wallace and all the local people who helped, advised and supported R.A.I.N. in all of their projects.
We built a feeding and community shelter in the nearby village of Chizuula. Two local boys Miner Samson and Wallace Issiah had a dream to build a shelter and to feed the orphaned and needy children of the village, similar to one Kingsley has been successfully running in Namakoma for a couple of years. It really showed us how much of a community spirit there was too. Everyone in the village helped inc: Miner's dad who fell off the roof but was still there the next day and all the kids helped gathering sand to make the floor. We also taught English lessons to about 20 girls and have provided a blackboard so Miner and Wallace can continue the lessons . Rob has provided the utensils for a feeding programme and the funding for a pilot project which Kingsley is overseeing.
